Secret world of plumbing
VICTORIAN PLUMBERS
HAVE SUCH A KEEN
INTEREST IN SEEKING
OUT REFRIGERATION
AND AIR CONDITIONING
(RAC) WORK THAT I
SUSPECT THEY SECRETLY YEARN TO BE A PART OF THE CLIMATE CONTROL INDUSTRY.
Sandra Van Dijk – Editor
IT MAKES SENSE, the RAC industry is clearly more exciting but it is still no excuse to make a play for work that should be undertaken by a fully qual- ified technician.
A RAC specialist has a unique set of skills and has completed training that is very different to the plumbing trade. I mean, I wouldn't call an electri- cian to fix my car.
With the exception of policy makers in Victoria, we all know that plumbers should stick to plumb- ing, it is common sense. But they obviously do things differently in Victoria.
Check out this press release issued on October 4, 2017 reminding homeowners to know their rights. “The Victorian Building Authority (VBA), which regulates the building and plumbing industries, re- minds homeowners that air‐conditioners must be installed by an appropriately licensed or registered plumbing practitioner.” This isn't a joke, for the full story turn to page 6.
Back to the real world and training has been at the forefront of a number of good news announce- ments in recent weeks with the opening of a HVAC Centre of Excellence at Holmesglen’s Chadstone campus in Melbourne.
This is in addition to a $1.5 million fitout by Queensland TAFE at the Ashmore Trade Training Centre on the Gold Coast.
The world of air conditioning is always evolving, but check this out for a new business model.
We are all familiar with software-as-a-service so why not a subscription service for air conditioning? It's an idea that has been introduced in Singapore although the pricing plans are a little scary, they remind me of the monthly phone plans we had in the early days of mobile phones. Like all monthly plans the big sell is the immediate access to cool- ing without paying thousands of dollars to install a system in your home.
A local electronics and furniture retailer, Courts, is offering deals that range from $29 to $99 a month. It really depends on how many units you want or what kind of air-conditioner brand you prefer. But for that fee Courts will provide and install the air- con units, send technicians to conduct regular cleaning and maintenance, and even throw in un- limited repair services. But here's the catch, it is a minimum six year deal via monthly deductions from your credit card. And at the end of six years, you own the unit.
In other news the date has been set for ARBS 2020, its all happening from May 19-21, 2020. But first get ready for CCN Live on October 10, 2019.
I cannot wait to share details of this year's speaker program and don't forget to nominate for the 2019 HVACR Leadership Awards.
This may be your last chance as nominations close on July 31, 2019.
