THE first half of 2020 has been a rough ride, financially and other- wise, for many in every industry. The Covid-19 pandemic and the measures governments have taken to crush it have wreaked havoc on business everywhere.
Our packaging industry here in Australia was no different. But it hasn’t been all bad, as evinced in some financial reports of the major packaging companies (see pages 6, 7, and 8). Hikes in demand for some products have, to some extent, off- set declines in demand for others.
As packaging was rightfully deemed an essential service, com- panies have been able to continue working throughout even the most restrictive lockdowns. Companies like LJM in Victoria have continued working with stringent measures in place to ensure the safety of employ- ees (see page 38).
There is a profusion of other great coverage in the September-October PKN. On page 18, we profile founder and CEO of Planet Protector Packaging, Joanne Howarth, who was recently named the Cartier Laureate for South Asia and Oceania.
Rounding out the issue, you can find expert analysis on the benefits and pitfalls of digitisation strategies starting on page 32 in our feature on line integration and automation.
While the pandemic has put some things on hold and complicated oth- ers, there is still innovation and progress, with more to come. ■
