Closing the loop:
Recycled protective packaging
Storopack has staked its claim as the only manufacturer currently delivering air pillows made of 100 per cent recycled material using post-consumer-recycled material.
THE new AIRplus air pillows from Storopack are made from 100 per cent recycled films. These films comprise a blend of post- consumer-recycled material (PCR) and post-industrial recy- cled material (PIR). The film
itself is also completely recyclable. The PCR used in this application is plastic that can no longer be used for its original purpose, such as food packaging. Using it for applications such as these pillows allows it to be converted once again into new
plastic.
Storopack marketing manager
Australia Linda Hagan told PKN the innovative protective packaging product closes the loop on soft plas- tics recycling.
The lightweight pillows add very little additional weight to the carton.
“The use of PCR in the manufac- turing process addresses the ques- tion of what to do with soft plastics already in the waste stream and sup- ports the development of a circular economy,” she said.
The addition of AIRplus 100 per cent recycled air pillows to Storopack’s comprehensive range of sustainable packaging products, ensures Storopack customers can keep their operational costs low, according to Hagan.
The lightweight pillows add very little additional weight to the car- ton. The space-saving rolls – with inflation on-demand – require mini- mal floor space, allowing the air pil- lows to be produced at a packing sta- tion to quickly safeguard products.
Storopack has a variety of easy-to- operate and user-friendly delivery systems available. These can be used on their own or incorporated into tailored integrated solutions to suit individual requirements and fit into packaging processes.
All of the AIRplus machine types can be integrated into existing pack- ing processes, including in combi- nation with automated packing lines and at the packing station, according to Storopack. Products can be ideally blocked, braced and top-filled in the carton with the AIRplus 100 per cent recycled pil- lows, as the air pillows optimally
fill the void. ■

STOROPACK: FINDING VALUE IN WASTE
Storopack is an international, family-run company that takes sustainability seriously. The business has specialised in optimum protection for products for more than
60 years.
When it comes to choosing an appropri-
ate solution, the benefits and functions of Storopack’s products play a crucial role. The company says design, recycling, and sustainability take centre stage in terms of
product development, in combination with a commitment to outstanding material quality.
Company-wide standards and values ensure a successful collaboration with customers, partners, and employees.
More than 30 per cent of the products manufactured by Storopack are made of re- newable or recycled raw materials. The company’s mission, “perfect protective packaging”, informs its approach to
sustainability. For every product that is damaged in transit, resources are con- sumed unnecessarily due to new produc- tion and additional transport, thus harming the environment.
By using recycled plastic in its air pillows, Storopack is part of a larger movement towards a circular economy. The company is hard at work creating another stream in which plastic waste has value.
