   Beyond commercial print
Kissel + Wolf’s Jamie Weller looks at the opportunities for growth in packaging, and says that investing in software, technology and people will provide the platform for success.
The print market is changing with brands not wanting to order months in advance, keep their inventory level low
and with an ever-increasing product offering. There are clear signs of onshoring due to higher shipping costs, long lead times and the need for faster turnaround.
For printers in Australia and New Zealand, this offers an opportunity to diversify their product offering and pivot into the evolving packaging market.
To be successful, printers need to consider investing in software, technology, and people.
To handle dozens of jobs per
day, with possible different versions, a streamlined workflow and software tools are essential. General commercial printers can use their existing workflow or explore the different product offerings. However, when pivoting into fibre- based packaging, they need to invest in structural design software.
At Kissel + Wolf Australia we have a suite of workflow and software tools, ranging from MarketDirect PackCentral, an online customer portal for folding cartons and box manufacturers, to PrintSmith Vision, which is an affordable print- management software solution
that automates print operational processes. We also offer the complete Esko software tools, including ArtiosCAD, the world’s most popular structural design software for packaging, and ArtPro+, a powerful and native PDF prepress editing software tool.
Technology
The technology is the crucial part of the consideration. Printers need to research the different product offerings, by not only comparing
speeds and feeds, but also the capital investment, the running costs, and calculating their return on investment.
For short to medium-run
folding cartons and custom corrugated printed boxes, the technology needs to be digital inkjet printing. The trend towards more sustainable packaging gives no other choice than to invest in digital inkjet printing technology which can offer UV and water- based ink, printing with high quality onto fibre-based packaging.
Kissel + Wolf’s HighJet, Revo and high-speed single-pass digital inkjet printing solutions are the preferred choices for entry to mainstream digital production, all equipped with sustainable ink, inline varnish, and slotting. In addition, Kissel + Wolf offers the full range of iEcho digital creasing and cutting solutions, helping to convert the printed sheet into the final product.

Learn and master
Commercial printers understand
and already manufacture printed products. Folding cartons and corrugated boxes are additional product offerings that can be learned and mastered.
A critical part is the structural design of a box. The Esko ArtiosCAD comes with professional training, an existing resizable design library and best practices, helping to boost productivity for packaging professionals
handling structural design, product development, virtual prototyping, and manufacturing operations.
At Kissel + Wolf Australia
we offer a complete end-to-end solution for our customers. Ranging from productivity and workflow software to digital inkjet printing machines for the folding carton and corrugated box, to digital creasing and cutting solutions. In addition, we offer Augmented Reality activation services and finance through our preferred financier. All are complemented by our business consultancy services.
We are well-positioned to offer digital solutions, including local service, spare parts and consumables and to help general commercial printers pivot into the lucrative packaging market. 21
