July saw some ugly issues raised once again for the Australian foodservice sector with serious and consistent breaches of workplace law back in the headlines.
The month began with the shocking allegations that Rockpool Dining Group had underpaid migrant staff at restaurants, Saké and Munich Brauhaus. The claims assert that the country’s largest hospitality group had paid chefs as little as $15 per hour, with some chefs allegedly working up to 70 hours a week with 30 hours’ unpaid overtime.
Rockpool Dining Group has denied the allegations, but Federal Workplace Minister, Craig Laundy, has announced a formal investigation headed by the Fair Work Ombudsman.
The Ombudsman also released the findings of its Food Precincts Campaign. And it’s not great. Only 28 per cent of the 243 businesses it audited had adhered to workplace laws. Yet, because of the campaign the Ombudsman has managed to recover almost $472,000 in wages for workers.
Going forward it’s important to take heed of Fair Work Ombudsman Natalie James’ words: “Addressing entrenched, cultural non-compliance requires a combination of regulatory intervention, public awareness and industry leadership.”
