This was made possible because lo- cal food manufacturers, many of them multinationals, saw it was in their best interests – given the vaga- ries of the exchange rate – to support a local supplier. Today Cormack’s manufacturing operation accounts for over 60 per cent of its turnover.
INVESTMENT IN INNOVATION
“As well as maintaining our market leadership in CRCs we have made major investments and developed our patented Tamper-evident Vented Lock-band (TVL) range of closures [38mm – 110mm] in over 15 different sizes and with lined, unlined, and wedge-seal options,” Glinn says.
He notes that this closure has other benefits too: it is lighter in weight than counterpart products (saving over 300 tonnes of resin per year); its design makes it easier to apply on the production line and easier to remove in the consumer’s hands – which has delivered brand owners a high Ar- thritis Association [easy-open]score. Glinn says it also has improved tam- per evidence and anti-sabotage fea- tures compared to other local caps.
“This year we have expanded our range of 38mm flip caps for sauce and salad dressing bottles,” Glinn ex- plains. “Our current unit, with an ex- tended visor, was designed to deliver a point of difference for the brand owner and to make the product easy to open,” Glinn says.
However, not all production lines can process a cap with such a large protrusion, so Cormack has added two more caps into this range [pic- tured on facing page]: the standard cap with no visor, and the new styl- ised NV cap with an obvious and easy opening point that mitigates the need for a protruding visor.
“These additions to the range prove Cormack’s commitment to invest- ment in manufacturing in Australia. Our focus on design excellence sees us reducing material usage while ensuring our caps perform optimally for our customer, the brand owner, and the consumer,” Glinn says.
BUYING INTO NEW MARKETS
Two years ago, PKN reported on Cor- mack Packaging’s acquisition of clo- sure company Lindale, which has since been successfully integrated into the business, with significant investment to bring the operation up to HACCP standards.
This year, the company has pur- chased the Australian and New Zealand Tri-Sure operations, based in Penrith.
“This is an exciting acquisition as it moves us into new markets of both steel closures and bulk container closures, a market segment we have not been active in before,” says man- aging director Mathew Cormack.
“We see this as a great way to grow while allowing us to bring new solutions to our customers, both the end users of FMCG packag- ing closures that we currently sup- ply, as well as the bulk packaging users that are part of Tri-Sure’s customer base,” Cormack says.
The acquisition has also seen the company’s export business grow, now exporting Cormack and Tri-Sure closures to China, India, Greece, the UK and USA.
With two solid acquisitions under the belt, and ongoing investment in innovation and automated technol- ogy and robotics across its facilities, what’s next for this proudly Austra- lian family-owned supplier of performance closure systems?
“The exciting challenge as Cormack Packaging moves into the fourth generation will be the steps we take alongside our customers and our suppliers, working to bring real changes in the post-consumer use of recycled plastics,” says Cormack. “We will continue to invest in innovation as a supplier of choice for our growing local and international customer base.” ■
