early 2000s is now suffering block obso- lescence issues and is being replaced by the Common Weapons Launcher (CWL), developed by Progeny Systems.
“The original weapons data converter shared commonality with some of the older US Navy classes of submarine, but has effectively become an Australia- unique piece of equipment,” CAPT Lind- say outlined. “We have now chosen to re- converge with the US Navy’s mainstream combat control system and adopt the CWL moving forward.”
ADCAP TORPEDO
Fundamentally linked to the Submarine Combat System is the Collins submarine’s primary effector, the Mk.48 Mod.7 AD- CAP torpedo. While the Mod.7 variant is a baseline weapon, it has several vari- ants in terms of software and the CWL upgrade will support compatibility from that perspective. The RAN is moving to update its torpedoes to Mod.8 configura- tion under the terms of the ACP, a collab- orative development initiative which will represent a major capability upgrade for the Mk.48 weapon.
TRANSITION TO ATTACK CLASS
As mentioned, the ACP will continue beyond Collins and incorporate the col- laboratively-developed submarine combat control system into the new Attack class submarines, which will be known as AN/ BYG01 (v)12.
“The Government has determined that the core BYG-1 combat system and the Mk.48 heavyweight torpedo will form the core of the Attack class combat system and its main armament,” CAPT Lindsay added. “With Lockheed Martin Australia (as the combat systems integrator) we are already looking ahead at what that will mean for the initial design of the Attack class com- bat system. We are also looking for con- sistency across both classes of submarine, which will make it easy for our submari- ners to transition from the Collins combat system to an Attack class in due course.”
COMMUNICATION UPGRADES
The six Collins submarines are also in the midst of a significant update and up- grade of their communications systems, which is being implemented in two stages under Project Sea 1439 Phase 5B2, the Collins Communications and Electronic Warfare Assurance Program.
