DID you know coffee beans only make up around 10-20 per cent of the actual fruit? The other 80 per cent is the 20 billion kilograms of coffee fruit waste produced every year.
Upcycling food waste is gaining momentum and I Am Grounded exemplifies this practice. Founders Vanessa Murillo and Lachlan Powell feature in our Rising Star section this month (from page 8) and their story is such a great example of people doing remarkable things.
In a similar vein, the winners of the 2021 Packaging Innovation & Design Awards (PIDA) have been announced and the competition was fierce. The food and beverage categories are always hotly contested, with Brookfarm taking out top honours this year with its high-barrier mono-polymer pouch, developed by O F Packaging. See page 10 for the winners’ round-up, and page 32 for the Save Food Packaging award recipients.
We talk about food waste a lot in Food & Drink Business and our story on Goodman Fielder (page 30) this month is inspiring. We are seeing companies embed sustainability goals in their operations, and the work Goodman Fielder has done to date is
evidence of what that can achieve: massive waste
reduction, significant investment, and company
commitment from the CEO to the factory floor.

cereal division Good Food Partners. The exhilaration of starting a whole new
business in a company with such a rich heritage is palpable. That’s on page 22.
