EIGHTEEN months after acquiring Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) for $15 billion, Asahi has kept the CUB brand and merged its Premium Beverages into the mix. Brands are Asahi Super Dry, Great Northern, Carlton Draught, Peroni, Corona, VB, Carlton Dry, Pure Blonde, Mountain Goat, Vodka Cruiser, Somersby Cider, Woodstock Bourbon, the Yaks, Pirate Life, 4Pines and Balter.
In March, Asahi announced
it was restructuring its barley supply chain, removing bulk handlers from the process, and allowing brewers to work directly with growers. The company buys
more than 70,000 tonnes of barley a year. More than 30 Victorian farmers and seven from southern New South Wales have signed
on. It means barley can be traced back to the source and Asahi can work directly with farmers and monitor agricultural inputs to help the business meet its sustainability targets.
Asahi acquired premium coffee brand Allpress Espresso
to fill a gap in its multi-beverage portfolio. CEO Robert Iervasi said Allpress met needs identified in Asahi’s broader strategy with a premium offering; scope to grow brand equity domestically and overseas; and an inroad to the
lucrative iced coffee market.
As part of Asahi’s commitment
to reduce emissions by 50 per cent by 2025, it installed some 7000 solar panels at its Yatala brewery in Queensland. The energy generated will power the annual production of more than 150 million stubbies or cans.
CEO Peter Filipovic announced he was stepping down midway through the year. Danny Celoni, currently CEO of PepsiCo Australia, will move into the role from February 2022.
Asahi Holdings (Australia) Pty Ltd is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Japan-based Asahi Group Holdings Limited.
