options for its label and packaging presses, which can be used as a replacement for cold foiling, and it has just launched Titon toner, a new formulation of food safe toners for fibre-based packaging and pouches.
Xeikon toner has long had
the advantage of being food-
safe, and has been recognised
as being so by the US Food and Drug Administration, or FDA as it
is better known. Food of course represents the bulk of packaging, so having a food-safe toner means Xeikon users can confidently enter the world’s biggest labels and packaging market. Crowley says, “Xeikon print platforms print directly onto off-the-shelf stock, there is no need to coat or prime the stock first, which obviously gives time and cost benefits.”
Pouchmaking, both fibre-based and non-fibre, is becoming a booming business, with everything from pet food, single serve health foods, as well as health foods,
be they mainstream or alternative
organic products, now going into pouches. “Print businesses that are investing in pouchmaking lines with Xeikon are opening up whole new markets, markets that are eager to avail themselves of the benefits,” he says
“ Xeikon has developed its technology so that it is part of the businesses journey. It is scalable. The machine can grow with the business.”

A print business installing a pouchmaking configuration means, for the new food and product entrepreneurs, instead of just having a printed label and then affixing that to a container, they are able to have the whole job produced in one go, on demand, in the run length they want, and use the whole of
the pouch as marketing real estate, and to accommodate legislative

requirements, giving them a big brand look, but without the need to order huge run lengths.
INKJET SOLUTIONS
Beginning with its toner presses, which are now in the Cheetah series, Xeikon has in recent years expanded into inkjet, with its Panther range of label and packaging presses, and its Idera corrugated presses. Crowley says, “Xeikon looked at a solution for ultra-durable labels and created its UV inkjet press technology. The inkjet printers also have a speed capability. We see them as a potential replacement of older flexo presses, they will provide production power, along with flexibility, and will give label print business owners real choice and real opportunity.”
The inkjet technology is also used in the new Idera corrugated print system. The new platform is a post- print, single-pass printing press, using certified food-safe, water-based inks
