VICTORIAN COMPANY SEES DEFENCE OPPORTUNITIES
NIGEL PITTAWAY | SYDNEY
DOEN WaterJets is a Melbourne-based, family-run business employing around 20 people that specialises in the development of waterjet propulsion systems for a range of watercraft and the company sees po- tential opportunities in the defence sector here in Australia.
The company formed part of the Victo- rian Government’s defence industry stand at Pacific 2019 and general manager of International Sales, Bob Khosravi, said he was keen to engage with potential Austra- lian and international customers during the three-day event.
Doen has already achieved considerable success in the defence market outside Aus- tralia, with customers already including the Australian Coast Guard and Lifeguard, the US Navy, Israeli Navy, Indonesian Navy, Indian Navy and Indian Border Security Force, The Malaysian Maritime Enforce- ment Agency (MMEA), Russian Navy, Tai- wan Police Force, the Royal Thai Navy and Vietnam Border Force.
Formed in 1971, Doen began with the development of the DJ60 and DJ80 series of waterjets for use in small pleasure craft and ski boats. The company has 15 differ- ent models of waterjet propulsion systems in its current portfolio, which are compat- ible with engine powers ranging from as low as 80 kW up to 4500 Kw, suiting vessels from 6m up to 50m. With almost 50 years of expertise in the field the company says it is uniquely positioned to partner with ship design companies, shipbuilders and opera- tors – including Defence – to offer solutions
Its present product portfolio includes the Kompakt series of water jets, designed for smaller vessels and the Optima series, for larger aluminium and steel vessels but is also available as an Integrated Waterjet (IWJ) system for use with fibreglass and composite-hulled vessels. All propulsion models in the portfolio are also available in the Direct Thrust (DT) version, in which the impeller main shaft is arranged directly in line with the, similar to a conventional propeller arrangement. ■
