New directions
AS convenience-craving shoppers seek tasty new ways to cut corners, the ready meal space is fast evolving to meet their needs. It’s the meal kit sector, however, that continues to steal the headlines, driven by some major moves by the big fish in this space. Companies like HelloFresh and Marley Spoon are working hard on their direct-to- the-doorstep model, which cuts out the retailer, and if research from IBISWorld is anything to go by, this could be a smart move.
In the prepared meals space, much of the revenue growth in
recent years has been absorbed by the supermarkets’ multiple ranges of low-priced private-label meals, according to IBISWorld. The 128 Australian food companies operating in the space are the main losers from this trend, but the future is bright for some niches, according to the market researcher. See the full wrap on this fast moving sector in our ready meal feature starting on p20.
This month we also take a look at another major industry trend – the functional food movement, and we feature Set the Bar, a company founded by a brother and sister duo who are moving into new nutritional territory with their
enerGi Bio Bars.
We also explore the less glamorous – but worthy – business issue of getting food industry inputs from A to B efficiently, and in this issue on p40, we take a look at how advanced vision-based grading, and the latest packing and palletising systems, are
enabling one of Australia’s largest citrus packers to better manage the mandarin boom – not to mention helping the rest of us get our
five-a-day!
