   THE GOSPEL FINDS THE SPIRIT
Melbourne distillery The Gospel says its first project release for 2022, Fortified Cask, is a dedication to the art of selecting the right spirit for the right cask.
The Gospel selected three Australian ex-fortified wine barrels – Apera, Chardonnay Tawny and Fortified Semillon – to balance their signature dry rye grain for a richer and sweeter finish.
The spirit mellowed at the top of Gospel’s Brunswick warehouse for a further six months, absorbing the full force of Melbourne’s 21/22 summer and maximising the extraction of flavour from the barrels.
Fortified Cask was purposefully released at 52 per cent ABV to represent the spirits character and showcase how it interacted with the oak. The result is a rye whiskey with roasted walnut, maple syrup, clove,
 A CRIMSON TIDE
South Australian Twenty Third Street Distillery has released a Mulberry Gin in time for winter, using mulberries and oranges from the Riverland region.
The gin’s show stopping crimson colour reflects the flavours, with an initial berry sweetness followed by lingering herbal and peppery complexity, lifted with juniper and citrus.
Twenty Third Street Distillery brand manager Amelia Wright said the gin was the result of complex flavour building and careful harvesting.
“The Riverland mulberries used in this gin are harvested from October to November and combined with cane sugar syrup that has been infused with juniper for 48 hours. We
leather and fig on the nose, and orange marmalade, fruitcake and bitter caramel on the palate.
This limited release is RRP $135 and is available online.
distil our Mulberry Gin in copper before the mulberries are added to retain the refined ‘heart’,” said Wright.
The bottles feature artwork titled Mulberry Dreams by Lena Baumgartner, an Adelaide born and raised self-taught artist.
The Mulberry Gin is available at Twenty Third Street Distillery in Renmark and nationally through First Choice Liquor Market and Liquorland.

      SO SODA QUENCHES NOLO THIRST
With a background in craft beer brewing and hospitality, and a desire to adopt a healthier lifestyle, partners Dan Hastings and Amelia Carew created So Soda, a non-alcoholic adult soft drink.
“We felt that the options that were on the market were just not what we were looking for and there were no brands with any fun, it was all so serious,” Hastings said.
The first two flavour releases are Watermelon Mint Spritz and Yuzu Lime Chilli with a third flavour on the way and more in development.
The sodas have at least 50 per cent less sugar than comparative drinks, are all-natural, preservative-free and made to be drunk straight, mixed or garnished.
“The movement to drink less booze is clear. Everyone knows it and the data doesn’t lie. But not everyone is seeking sobriety, most just want to moderate their alcohol intake and they still want to enjoy a drink,” Hastings said.
So Soda retails at RRP $17.99 per 4-pack cluster and RRP $89.99 for a 24-pack case through its website.
