AT LONG LAST HVACR IS GETTING A HECK OF A LOT MORE ATTENTION THAN IT HAS IN THE PAST.
Sandra Van Dijk – Editor
JUST 12 MONTHS ago we were discussing ways to deal with the trade’s invisibility problem, which has only exacerbated Australia’s skills shortage.
But at last the spotlight has arrived. It’s time to take centre-stage and to get as much attention as we can. The wider community needs to under- stand the importance of our industry and how it touches so many areas of modern life. This grow- ing interest in HVACR was always going to happen, the demand for cooling appliances alone is set to quadruple by 2050.
Sadly, it is the COVID-19 pandemic that has ele- vated many of the discussions around HVACR in recent months.
There has been plenty of news stories with topics ranging from Indoor Air Quality and ven- tilation to the cold food chain, pharmaceuticals and refrigeration.
Regardless of the topic, this is an opportunity to foster a greater understanding of what we do.
One way of doing this is by sharing our experi- ences, hearing first-hand from those working in the trade. And that is exactly what we have done in this edition of the magazine.
We have profiled our top 20 technicians under 25 years of age from around Australia and asked them to explain why refrigeration and air condi- tioning is such a great trade.
Their stories are uplifting and are likely to at- tract plenty of interest from other young people undecided about their future careers.
CCN, WorldSkills Australia and NextGen spon- sor, Daikin Australia, will encourage our Top 20 to be career ambassadors in their local areas.
Apprentices are certainly on trend right now with the government committing billions of dol- lars to support tradies.
We just need to ensure our trade gets priority. It’s time to spread the word.
