AS I WRITE this editorial, there is some sem- blance of normalcy returning to parts of the community in the wake of the COVID19 pandemic. Some states have schools go- ing back in phased returns, restrictions on movements are being eased, and some busi- nesses have begun making plans to open their doors again. But travel, both interstate and international, is still not on the table.
There are parts of the economy that have been shattered by the pandemic while others have been able to trade through as best they can. And some have even managed to thrive. Speaking to BAE Systems Australia manag- ing Director Gabby Costigan this week, her business took on roughly 100 new people each month since the start of year. The Hunter program alone aims to have 1,200
and secure it themselves with authorised antivirus and security software.
Market research, reports, business ideas, even visual collateral such as logos and brand names can all be incredibly sen- sitive information, and one small leak can sabotage a major campaign. Protecting and managing all such assets should be a major priority for any business, particular- ly small businesses that often go all in on one big idea. Asset management is easier in a confined workspace, but when data moves across a global network of devices outside the premises of a physical office, and data is constantly being exchanged among the employees, asset management becomes a different ball game altogether.
Using solutions such as geofencing, predictive asset monitoring, and ticketing systems can help businesses better handle their asset management needs.
We talk to our remote employees until they’re blue in the face about cybersecu- rity challenges and how to solve them, but if we can’t manage to get them to actually follow procedure, we might as well be talk- ing to a brick wall, Keap concluded.
Face-to-face business communication beats every texting technology out there, regardless of its cutting-edge abilities. Email, WhatsApp, Slack, Signal, Tele- gram, etc are all excellent messaging methods, but they’re no match for good old-fashioned, face-to-face conversa- tions, especially when speaking of highly sensitive issues, such as your business’ data security.
“Security is everyone’s responsibility” might be the ideal goal, but it’s rarely the everyday reality. The sales team? They’re concerned with sales. Finance? They’re concerned with... well, you see the pattern.
All of these questions were asked in such a short space of time with answers required yesterday. I have been truly im- pressed with how quickly our community has made it a success in terms of secure, flexible, remote working. I can only hope that we don’t forget the possible when the world goes back to ‘normal’. ■

Working from home or remotely has be- come the new normal for many. Business change has not been led by a CEO or CTO but by necessity. There is more time on email, the phone and video calls. There are a num- ber of technologies that have allowed this

quick evolution to happen. There are also businesses that have struggled to find se- cure solutions to the challenge. I know our company has nothing but time for Zoom while vast swathes of our community are not allowed to touch it!
Clearly, data security is a huge liability for small businesses with remote employ- ees – one that needs to be dealt with as a top priority, according to the Keap business blog. Companies must, first of all, increase awareness about security and sensitise their remote workers, and educate them about the possible dangers and preventive best practices. Strict password policies should be enforced, and all employees should be required to secure the laptops they intend to use for work. Better still, businesses can designate a remote employee’s work device
