Herma launches new enhanced recycling label stock
With its new adhesives, Herma (represented locally by Result Group) is thought to be the first company in the industry to offer label stock that is optimised to support the recycling of cardboard shipping boxes.
The distinguishing feature of the logistics and other labels produced with the new label stock is that contamination caused by the adhesive during recycling is practically ruled out.
“Sustainable actions around self-adhesive materials are many all over the world and Herma are leading the way, and we are a proud long-term partner,” Michael Dossor, group general manager at Result Group, told PKN.
“These new products, combined with Herma’s development of linerless materials and applicators, just further reinforces the commitment to sustainable material development.”
Herma has now successfully completed the certification procedure of the research institute PTS for five of its self-adhesive materials. The only condition imposed by the PTS certificates is that the mass of the label stock cannot exceed 25 per cent of the total mass of the box.
“In view of the light weight of a label, compared to the weight of the box to which it is applied, this condition will most likely be satisfied in every instance,” said Dr. Stefan Kissling, who oversees the development of adhesives and special coatings in Herma’s self-adhesive materials division.
“It was important for us to obtain certification not only for the adhesives, but also for the finished materials – the label stock.
“This end-to-end certification best reflects the products’ practical
applications, and to our knowledge, Herma is currently the only company in the industry to offer label stock certified in this way.”
For three of the new adhesives, the multi-layer technology pioneered by Herma held the key to success.
The new adhesive 72Bpt is being used in combination with two lightweight coated papers, namely HERMAwhite super (grade 240) and HERMAextracoat (grade 242). Each of these variants is characterised by good initial tack, and is therefore ideal for labelling cardboard boxes.
For laser labels on sheets, as frequently used in shipping applications, Herma has developed label stock consisting of the new adhesive 72Apc
and HERMAlaser
sheet (grade
135).
For optimising the recycling of board and paper, Herma is now offering a solution, likewise certified by PTS, in the thermal label segment as well. It is a self-adhesive material that combines the new adhesive 72Eps with HERMAtherm nature (grade 900), and is the first of its kind to dispense with chemical developers.
“Our new PTS-certified self-adhesive materials cover practically every application in the cardboard and folding box labelling segment,” said Kissling. “Label printers and users can find a suitable solution to achieve improvements in box recycling and the closed- loop material cycle.” ■
An online pet retailer based in South East Queensland has grown its business selling a broad range of affordable pet products, with Toyota Material Handling Australia (TMHA) forklifts increasing its reliability and efficiency.
Budget Pet Products, based in
Molendinar, started out selling pet products on eBay in 2009, with directors Karla Vandepol and Michael Chen running the operation from a garage.
Since then, Budget Pet Products has grown to a team of over 120 employees and multiple warehouse locations, providing affordable products to pet owners around the country.
For the past four years, the company has been a partner of TMHA, with the online pet store reaching out to TMHA following dissatisfaction with its previous forklift supplier.
As well as providing “excellent service with a focus on product reliability and durability”, TMHA has assisted Budget Pet Products with its growth from a handful of employees to the nationwide operation it is today.
“TMHA had proven to be an excellent partner through its growth period. They have made serving and providing parts so easy,” said Cheryl Norvock, Budget Pet Products warehouse manager.
“Overall, the service has been great. One key difference is that TMHA has always partnered with us to help solve our growing pains.”
Starting out with a single 2.5-tonne TMHA forklift, Budget
Pet Products now owns a mix of forklifts, order pickers and high lift pallet trucks.
Norvock said the durability and reliability of the TMHA forklifts were stand-out factors, a sentiment echoed by Chris Powell, area sales manager at TMHA.
“They know what they’re buying – TMHA is value for money, it’s always up there, and you get what you pay for,” Powell said.
“The value equation over the life of the forklift combined with our service expertise makes TMHA a very attractive prospect.”
Norvock also said that the excellent reliability delivered has led to hassle-free servicing for Budget Pet Products.
“We’ve found the ideal balance of machinery features and service offering with TMHA – our business is 24/7 with very little downtime and a machine with good features is nothing without the parts and service to back it up, and vice versa,” Norvock said.
“We’ve have had various machinery over the last 13 years, and find the combination of reliable TMHA forklift features and great service to be superior all-round offering.”
Since its inception in 2009, Budget Pet Products has steadily grown its business by offering affordable products for a wide range of pets. It has since amassed over 350,000 customers and looks set to continue to grow its burgeoning business. ■
