WHAT THE JUDGES SAID
Throughout all categories there were many exceptional pieces, making the selection of an ultimate winner a difficult task. What appealed to me most were pieces that made unexpected connections with the wider world around us, a leap of the imagination that had somehow found itself distilled into a cabinet, a chair, a carving, or a box. It requires great skill to synthesize these opposites, and even more to pull it of successfully.
These pieces explored and pushed the boundaries of accepted design and practice and took me to the edge of my comfort zone, revealing something new which lay hidden in plain sight.
Technique is the means to self-expression, it requires an understanding of materials, an eye for proportion, colour and texture, and attention to detail and finish.
Finally, these makers have found their own voice within the crowd, and in their own way added something new to the long tradition of woodworking.
