Creating stronger chains
IT is indisputable that the food supply chain is broken. From the amount of produce farmers churn back into the soil or send to landfill, the tonnes of food we waste every year, to the fact we produce enough food to feed our population three times over and yet 1.2 million Australian children are going hungry, the urgency with which this has to be addressed is not lost on anyone.
TUI Foods is an example of just what can be done with ingenuity and a determination to turn the existing system on its head, break it up and then put it back together in a way that benefits all parties along
the chain. It is inspiring and you can read all about it from page 10. Foodbank Australia is at the forefront of helping Australians
experiencing food insecurity. Its CEO Brianna Casey is driving the national discussion – and action – to not only ensure no one is going to bed or school hungry, but that the systemic issues contributing to the crisis are tackled. Read her column on page 14.
Julia Seddon provides a primer on water stewardship on page 22, explaining what it is, its importance, and how beneficial it can be for businesses in not only meeting sustainability
responsibilities but securing operations from
increasing climate risks.
In our special features this month, Jan Arreza
takes us through the developments in smart packaging (page 28) and the value it can bring in terms of engagement and information while in Meat, Fish & Poultry, Peter Bedwell writes about Game Farm, its history and growth plans (page 34).
In Automation & Digitisation (from page 38), we look at the cutting edge technologies and systems in the sector that are going to play a critical role if we are to solve the challenges of a workable, equitable supply chain, food waste and insecurity, and an unpredictable climate.
Onward.
