focus on executing new supply contracts with various ex- port customers whilst ensuring the Australian customer continues to receive a quality outcome,” Faulkner said.
More than a few of the debut companies in both the Top 20 SMEs and Top 20 ANZ SMEs are from the construc- tion/infrastructure side of the house. With barriers to entry relatively low and facilities work ramping up (plus it’s an easy way to inject cash into a COVID-19 affected economy), their success is a great addition to the Defence community.
at No. 14).
“APGC are an emerging construction
services business and it was a key goal to continue our growth through what- ever this year threw at us, and we have converted the resource and capacity im-
pact of less certainty and continuity in the market, into an opportunity to bring on other aspects to our business, such as gaining some key accreditations and moving further to- ward digital technologies, not just in our offices, but more particularly at our workfaces.
“A key outcome of this year we would say is that we now have a lot more focus on taking care of our people, and a

greater value on the authenticity and regularity of verbal communication with our team,” Philps and Culpo said.
CONCLUSION
It is good to see more companies reporting on the extra questions we have included in the survey. For example, the female workforce participation rate has increased for many companies along with more companies responding the to the question (see table 4 for this information). Diversity in all its forms provides cognitive diversity, a key element of innovation and collaboration in supporting agile teams.
As previously mentioned, the vexed debate over AIC in terms of content vs capability continues unabated but will hopefully be clarified this year with the government pro- ceeding with work on AIC audits of public plans (see this month’s From the Source interview for more on this from Minister Price) and more legacy programs reaching a point where AIC in any context can be considered in terms of performance. We have figures on AIC, exports and R&D seen in tables 5 and 6 respectively where companies have chosen to take part.
Workforce figures (table 7) are also looking healthy at just over 33,200 for the almost 70 companies that responded to the survey. Defence Industry as a wider economic driver is not to be underestimated.
Once again, I would like to thank the companies that have taken the time to engage with ADM’s Top 40 Defence Contractors survey. It’s a big annual undertaking for a small organisation but the insights the voluntary data provides is helpful in seeing long term trends.
“We were fortunate to come into this year with the busi- ness in a very strong position, and that has probably helped us bring some broader options to how we dealt with the disruption of COVID on the normal run- ning of our business,” Adam Philps and Gianni Culpo, both Directors at APGC Group (first time in ANZ SME Top 20
