“VLF, or very large format, CtP is experiencing an upswing in Australia and New Zealand, as the demand
for faster plate changes on both
wide web and oversize sheetfed litho machines increases. Markets include publishing, packaging, POS and platemaking where several jobs are ganged up on one plate. B1 or 8-up CtP remains the most popular, but Screen VLF platesetters will cater for anything up to 96p A4 on one plate.”
VLF does not restrict the user
to only the larger plate sizes, as B1 plates can be imaged on the same device. The 24000N-Z model is equipped with a 1,024 channel head that boosts output up to 35 24-up plates per hour, or 45 plates per hour when making B1 sized 8-up plates.
The whole system can be linked to Screen’s Equios workflow and Trust Network Service, the company’s sophisticated online maintenance support service.
Screen CtP thermal platesetters are available through plate suppliers such as Fujifilm, WRH Global/ Xingraphics and, for flexographic CtP, Jet Technologies. 21
latest label press at PrintEx
Screen GP Australia’s display at PrintEx on stand B08, shared with Jet Technologies, will feature live demonstration of its
Truepress Jet L350UV+ digital label press, running with CMYK+White and extra Orange ink. The 60 metres/ minute inkjet press will also be fitted with the optional chill roller system for printing on thinner label stocks.
“The L350UV range of label presses is expanding and getting faster,” says local managing director Peter Scott. “We recently introduced low-migration inks for food packaging and a new blue ink for richer blues and wider gamut.
The blue ink option is driven by a growing awareness of corporate and product brand image demand for higher quality labelling and packaging. Blues in particular
are popular for corporate designs and product packaging, keeping consistency with brand identity.
“Screen digital label presses are available through Jet Technologies with support from Screen GP in Australia and Jet Technologies with Fujifilm in New Zealand,” says Scott.
CtP still strong
Computer-to-Plate may be 25 years old as a technology but advances continue to be made in respect of speed, environmental footprint, longevity of lasers and cost. Flexographic CtP has also been added to the Screen range.
Screen has long been the dominant CtP player, with a reputation that works both for and against it – Screen platesetters last a long time and are reliable, so printers tend to hang onto them for longer. There are more than

20,000 CtP devices in use globally manufactured by Screen, equating to almost 50 per cent market share.
The latest addition to Screen GP’s CtP range is the PlateRite Ultima 24000N series of VLF thermal plate recorders, capable of up to 24 x A4 pages on a 1632mm x 1325mm plate. They feature the latest GLV (grating light valve) imaging heads and deliver high throughput of up to 35 full-size plates per hour (Z model), with an outstanding cost performance. Peter Scott notes:

Stop Press!
It’s official – Screen’s Truepress Jet 520HD with SC inks is as good as offset.
Image Test Labs (ITL), a division of Technology Watch, LLC of the USA, has announced
that it has achieved an historic first in the printing industry, by configuring an inkjet web press to deliver the image reproduction quality of a commercial sheetfed offset press, on offset stock, over a production run of three miles of paper. ITL printed a complex test image on each press side-by-side on the same sheet of paper, demonstrating that the output of the Screen 520 HD SC inkjet web press is suitable
for commercial colour work that requires offset sheetfed quality. See next pages for more, and see the test samples at PrintEx.
