SUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT – ADVERTORIAL
Innovations to boost gut and immune health
Consumers are increasingly looking for healthier, more nutritious options in what they choose to eat and drink. People are prioritising immune and digestive health and this demand is driving a growth in functional food and beverage innovation.
AS consumers want products that offer health benefits, with many preferring to get their nutrition from foods over vitamins and supplements, the number of consumer products with functional claims increase.
As a result it is becoming more difficult for manufacturers to differentiate their offerings. Add to this the fact that today’s health- conscious consumer is better educated on health issues, and now seek scientifically-backed health claims.
In a Kerry Global Consumer Survey, nearly four in ten (39 per cent) consumers said seeing research or scientific data claims would encourage them to buy a healthy lifestyle product. A recent FMCG Gurus research shows that nearly half (49 per cent) of global consumers want to hear more
information on the nutritional benefits of products.
Kerry VP and general manager John Quilter says: “Consumers are increasingly sceptical and rightly asking questions about the effectiveness of functional ingredients such as probiotics.
”The best way to respond is by clearly communicating benefits and the research supporting them. Scientific substantiation helps manufacturers and consumers alike understand the value of ingredients and choose products that can really support health.”
SCIENCE-BACKED BENEFITS BUILD TRUST The Kerry Proactive Health Portfolio supports food and beverage manufacturers in developing product solutions that meet consumer needs with benefits backed by science. Two
of its innovative products are GanedenBC30 and Wellmune. GanedenBC30, a patented
probiotic, is backed by more than 25 published papers supporting its safety and efficacy of benefits. This hardy spore-forming probiotic is highly stable and viable through shelf life and the low pH of stomach acid, as well as processing conditions like heat, shear and HPP pasteurisation.
Not all probiotics are created equal. Strain differentiation is not just important but vital, because the benefits of a probiotic depend on it.
The stability of GanedenBC30 creates new possibilities to offer
the benefits of probiotics in everyday foods and beverages.
Wellmune is a patented yeast beta 1,3/1,6 glucan extracted from the cell wall of a strain of baker’s yeast using a proprietary process. It is supported by more than a dozen published clinical studies confirming its safety and ability to help improve immune health in people of all ages through functional foods, beverages and supplements.
ESTABLISHING FOOD- HEALTH RELATIONSHIPS In Australia and New Zealand, the requirements for making a general level health claim are set out in in the FSANZ Food Standards Code.
Companies seeking to make a claim can undertake a systematic review of evidence of a causal food-health relationship. This was possible for GanedenBC30 and Wellmune as they are supported by a wealth of scientific evidence linked to digestive health and immunity.
For GanedenBC30, Kerry recently notified FSANZ of its self-substantiated food-health relationships including aiding, supporting and boosting digestive health.
For Wellmune the food-health relationship are supports immune health, reduces the incidence of the common cold and reduces the incidence of URTI.
