                 MACHINERY MATTERS
         The return of exhibitions
Welcome to our second edition of Machinery Matters for 2022, brought to you by the APPMA in an exclusive partnership with PKN Packaging News and Food & Drink Business.
In the last couple of editions of 2021, and indeed our first edition for this year, we were optimistic that vaccination programs, improved testing technology and Covid-safe work practices would provide the platform for the safe re-emergence of sporting, entertainment and business events, along with productions and exhibitions.
I am pleased to say that at the time of writing, this past optimism has been rewarded with a majority of industries back to full trading, helped by following Covid-safe practices.
International and domestic industry exhibitions have been severely affected over the past two years. Many were cancelled, although attempted to remain active in a virtual environment – with mixed results. It is exciting to now see these exhibitions returning, with IPACK-IMA and IFFA in May, Propak Asia set for June, Foodtech Packtech in New Zealand in September, and Pack Expo in Chicago planned for October. Industry exhibitions provide a very important and unique service where industry members can variously see new machinery and innovations, maintain their awareness of trends impacting the industry, network with the broader industry and recognise successes and celebrate ... all under one roof.
With that said, our own AUSPACK exhibition scheduled for 17-20 May, along with the APPMA Awards of Excellence (18 May) and AUSPACK Leaders Forum (18-19 May) are all on track. With great pleasure, we’re seeing a record number of Australian-based companies represented, along with a growing number of internationals now that the borders have re-opened, which is providing the opportunity to once again re-engage, display and demonstrate new technologies and innovations across the whole processing and packaging sector – from machinery and ancillary equipment, to materials and packaging, food processing, and industry services. APPMA has exhibition enhancements and exciting announcements planned for the entire week, which is well set to deliver maximum value to all exhibitors, attendees and sponsors.
WORD OF CAUTION
One thing I would like to caution industry about, is a reminder to be aware of cyber risks given the state of international events in Eastern Europe.
During the APPMA’s digital lunchtime series in September last year, we highlighted the need for all businesses to protect themselves from cyber-security attacks. In light of the events that began in late February, and which at the time of going to press are still ongoing, we recommend all companies review their systems and processes.
AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE
To finish on a high note, as we count down to the Association’s flagship event, the APPMA Awards of Excellence submissions have closed with a record number of submissions, reflecting that industry is welcoming and embracing the upgraded award categories. All finalists will be promoted and recognised during AUSPACK, with winners announced at the Gala Dinner on Wednesday 18 May.
I look forward to seeing everyone during Processing and Packaging Week 2022.
