Screen says its new SAI press takes labels to next level, and provides a platform for multiple applications, giving users new market opportunities.
Launched at the last LabelExpo, the new Screen GP Truepress Jet L350UV SAI inkjet system will print multiple applications
including labels of all types, folding cartons, and pouches.
Production speed has been raised to 60 meters a minute, printing CYMKOB, or 50 mpm with white. Jack Malki, managing director of local distributor Jet Technologies, says, “The Screen L350 SAI takes digital label printing to the next level. The high speed, its ability to be upgraded in the field, and the Screen precision quality, add up to a compelling proposition.”
Screen says the new press features improved colour reproduction, more speed, and superior scalability that enables it to meet a wide variety
of market needs. Applications include labels of all types, as well
as a diverse range including folding carton boxes and pouches, according to Screen GP Australia managing director Peter Scott.
“The Truepress Jet L350UV SAI model represents the latest advances in the L350 series, which was introduced in 2014, and is now being run at printers around the world,” he says.
“The suffix SAI means stability, accuracy, and integration – with the word Sai also meaning colourful in Japanese. This is a major step for digital label production as additional slots

for printheads are onboard, meaning orange, blue and white inks can be added to the wide-gamut CMYK inkset.
“Overall colour management has been developed in collaboration with CGS Publishing Technologies
in Germany. These technologies provide a wider range of colour expression than was previously possible, increasing Pantone coverage and reducing colour differences with specific spot colours. CGS has been a leader in colour management for twenty years, with its Oris proofing systems enjoying considerable success in the ANZ region,” Scott says.
Four scalable variants of the L350 SAI will be available, including E for entry-level, S for Standard, and a flagship Z model is planned for the future. There is also an LM version using low-migration inks for food packaging applications.
“We, and our dealer partner Jet Technologies, are excited about this latest evolution of the successful L350UV label press line,” Scott says.
“The features really respond to market requirements, and we can point to more than 180 presses shipped to customers worldwide, many of whom have ordered a second or even a third machine. As with
all Screen technologies, quality and integrity of the build is high, uptime is among the highest in the industry, and image quality is superb.”21
Digital flexible pouch production now available
on Screen label presses
Printers looking to extend
into the fast-growing flexible pouch production can now enter the market with the Screen Truepress Jet L350UV+LM (low- migration ink) label press, which is able to be used for food safe short-run stand-up pouches.
Peter Scott, managing director for Screen GP ANZ, says, “We have been working on pouching solutions for a while now, and the level of interest is escalating. The key is combining the short-run benefit of digital printing with a converting line to laminate and make the pouches.
“These lines are readily available from manufacturers such as Karlville, Uflex and others. A variety of closures such as zip-locks, vent valves (for coffee) and spouts can be built in when the pouches are ready for aseptic filling and sealing. The L350UV+LM is ideal for pouches because of the food-safe inks.”
Pouch packaging of food and drink was originally developed by the US military and Nasa.
The ability of the Screen Truepress Jet to print pouches highlights the ability of the new generation of digital presses to produce multiple applications, giving printers a broader market range to sell into from one piece of kit.
Scott sees it as a new direction for label producers, with the short-run benefit
of digital bringing big brand marketing to SME producers. He says, “There is one case of
a small manufacturer of 16 kinds of fragrant bath salts moving to digitally-printed pouches and selling them through Amazon online, with excellent sales worldwide. This is just one of the opportunities offered by Screen Truepress short-run pouch printing and converting – as well as labels of course.”
