During the 2020 academic year, a steep rise COVID-19 cases resulted in the UK entering a nation-wide
lockdown, prompting the University of Surrey to halt all face to face teaching. Such a unique circumstance deeply affected students and many students found the situation overwhelming. The purpose of this campaign was to provide a mechanism for students to express their themselves creatively in these unprecedented circumstances. As part of the ‘Surry at Home’ campaign, the Community Zone worked with the School of Literature and Languages and Surrey Lit Soc to encourage students to write poems about their experiences staying at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Students submitted reflecting and inspiring poems to the campaign. The Community Zone also encouraged students to submit photos documenting unique moments during the lockdown. An online poetry workshop with the Young People’s Laureate for London, Theresa Lola, was also held with the participants of the campaign. The workshop was an opportunity for students to learn to express their experiences creatively. The result is a collation of different students experiences of lockdown in poetry and photography form
All poems in the anthology are written by students or staff at the University.
