SOHO
Soho is one of the cornerstones of Manhattan’s art scene. The neigh- borhood became the go to place for galleries and artists in the late 1960s/1970s and started to really boom in the 1980s. The move from the Upper East Side to Soho was attractive to galleries since the area offered a lot of benefits to the art scene (mostly due to architectural features inherent to the area which was used by the textile industry for manufacturing). The buildings offered large scale spaces with large windows - perfect for studios and places to create. It used to be also considered a “wasteland” within the city that made rent or even the purchase of buildings very cheap. Compared to the commercial- ized Soho we see today this is almost unimaginable.
