Nikko Toshogu Shrine – Yomeimon Gate
Nikko-san Rinnoji Shrine
NIKKO – A town with World Heritage sites surrounded by waterfalls, lakes, natural hot springs and gorgeous natural sceneries. Shinkyo Bridge is the main entrance to Nikko’s temples and shrines complex. After crossing the Shinkyo Bridge, a stone monument indicates the entrance of Mt. Nikko’s Rinnoji Temple Complex, which includes 15 temples and towers in the mountains.
Visit the famous “Three Wise Monkeys” representing the maxim “See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” taught by the Tendai Sect, a Japanese school of Buddhism.
Dating back to the 1600s, this incredibly ornate shrine is the final resting place to Tokugawa Ieyasu, one of Japan’s most influential rulers.
The shrines and temples complex around Mount Futara was founded in the 8th century by Saint Shodo, a famous Buddhist monk. Nikko Toshogu Shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu and part of UNESCO’s World Heritage list.
Visit Kegon Waterfall voted one of the top 3 waterfalls in Japan.
Before the day’s up, visit Nikko Hot Spring – a great place to experience the beloved Japanese onsen tradition of soaking in geothermal pools. Locals have sworn by the therapeutic powers of the springs for decades, swearing they can heal ailments from burns and arthritis to acne!
