INTRODUCTION
Why Do You Need an Equation?
I can’t tell you when I recognized how the most important factors in my life added up to achieving my goals. I’m sure it started when I spent summers on my grandmother’s West Texas farm where she didn’t accept anything less than 100% effort and had zero patience for anything she perceived as laziness. You did what you said you would, with no excuses.
I’m also positive that a horrific car crash in the summer before my senior year factored into this same life equation—teaching me perseverance and the importance of defining my goals.
From the early years through my military experience and
to where I am now, I’ve paid attention to what works and what doesn’t deliver results for me. I’ve made a commitment to myself to maintain awareness, constantly weighing my progress.
There wasn’t one “aha” moment where this Life Equation made itself known to me. But my drive to succeed and to overcome obstacles caused me, at some point, to look at those traits, actions, and skills that were proven to keep me on track and propel me forward.
In retrospect, I wish I had taken the time to analyze the factors back in my days at the United States Military Academy at West Point. I might have avoided some missteps, but since I was there to learn, those detours taught me valuable lessons.
After serving in the U.S. Army Special Operations Forces as a helicopter pilot, I moved on to a career in resort properties sales and marketing. I first served alongside teams of badass professionals and eventually moved on to building those elite groups. And that’s where I finally identified the factors that have been supporting me, like pillars, throughout my life. That’s when I knew that a Life Equation is a necessity.
