Rarely does one get the opportunity in life to thank someone for all they’ve done for your career, but that is exactly the gift I was given.
As a young upstart stylist, I had opened my own salon, in the middle of nowhere, which my staff and I liked to tell everyone it was in the middle of everywhere.
That day, the salon was hoppin’ when a tall, bold smartly-dressed gentleman strolled in and proceeded to tell me why I should bring in
the brand he was selling. After a number of visits he stated, “You’re a hot new salon and you should be using a hot new brand.” So I began using it and the brand did what he said it was going to do.
Atthenextbigshow, JBwalked with me and introduced me to
the Matrix team, which led to
my position as an educator. He challenged and booked me to teach
a class to hairdressers on how to increase their hair color business entitled, “The Colour of Money.”
I eventually was promoted to “guest artist” for Matrix and traveled the USA and Canada teaching that very program. One door opened and then another as time flew by; all because JB opened the door first. I told myself I would thank him someday. Well someday came. I met a person who was a mutual friend, who told me where JB was living and he was now 93 years old and golfing daily. Not knowing if he would recognize or even remember me, I knocked on the door, and he recognized me immediately. When he pulled me in to his arms in a big bear hug, I couldn’t control the tears. Through them, I mumbled, “thank you.”
My sound advice is, don’t miss the chance to say thanks to the person who opens doors for you.
