Toni Elias came out swinging at the beginning of the 2018 MotoAmerica Superbike Championship
in the same way that he has throughout his first three seasons of competition on American soil. The Catalan won five out of the first six rounds and held a fairly commanding lead in the championship
-- thirty-five markers ahead of Beaubier after the first three rounds -- but all of that changed at the fourth round at Road America. The first Superbike race was mainly a three-way dog fight between the two championship rivals and Josh Herrin, swapping positions each and every lap all the way until the checkered flag. Elias’s Suzuki seemed to have a slight advantage in straight line speed as the two Ya- maha riders were finding their time in the middle of the corners, contributing to a fascinating battle and a multitude of lead changes. Beaubier stayed relatively quiet throughout the early stages of the race, but he turned up the intensity in the waning laps, zoning in on Elias. The Factory Yamaha rider had the lead as the trio of leaders entered the first corner on the white flag lap, but the steamrolling Suzuki of Elias barged through on the inside, brushing elbows with Beaubier on his way to the lead.
