we were side-by-side right after the first tabletop and he went from the right side of the track to the left side. So, he went more straight into the corner and I went from the left to the right and I just held it wide open all the way, I don’t think I let off going around the corner to be honest. It was literally everything I had, but it felt so good -- not to just pass him, but I didn’t have to make an overly aggressive pass -- it was just super smooth, super clean. I loved it. Just goin’ out through the lap,
I just had to tell myself to breathe in the air. I knew it wouldn’t be a hassle, it was a four lap race so I could push as hard as I could the whole time and I wouldn’t get tired. Overall it just felt good, just like winning a race at Loretta’s. I tried to not get nervous or anything ‘cause that’s when my arms start to pump, but it just felt good the whole time.
What was going through your head after settling into the lead?
Honestly, the first lap I thought someone was right be- hind me the whole time, like right on me. On the 125, you can’t really hear people that are exactly behind you because your bike is loud enough to cover it and I thought someone was right behind me, ‘cause I try to not look back unless it’s somewhere where I can quickly look in my peripheral or on a one-eighty. So,
I thought Hahn or Villopoto was right on me so I was
pushing hard. My dad just told me to be smooth and he gave me the O.K. in the mechanics area right before the finish, so that’s when I realized I could start to re- lax. I mean, two seconds isn’t enough but it’s definitely more of a comfort zone than having someone right on your tail.
What was the feeling like after taking the checkers and making it to the podium?
Yeah, throughout the race I think made it a little bit bet- ter -- I pulled like a six second lead, so being up on the podium alone I did a burnout and everything -- that was the first time I’ve ever done a burnout on the podium, even at the amateur races I’ve never got around to it.
It just felt good; seeing everyone there and all the fans cheering, I didn’t really expect it to be like that or the fans to be that stoked about it. It was insane seeing everyone cheering, like on the last lap I was pumping my fist on the last two tabletops and people were just going wild and I loved that. I went on the podium and my family was there, everyone was cheering; it’s just completely different from amateur motocross where you see all of your competitor’s dads and they’re all negative or something like that. It’s just a different vibe and I loved it.
