What sort of memories do you have from go- ing to Ascot with your
father as a kid? I often comment that I don’t have one hero, I have many heroes and most of ‘em are flat trackers from the late 50’s and early 60’s at Ascot. There was a guy Johnny Gibson and he used to wear a sweater over his leathers; it was a red sweater and it had these stripes around the arms. I used to demand to my parents that I had a red sweater like that and
if it didn’t have the same number of stripes, it had to be exact...and I think I drove my parents nuts.
You got a 50cc Honda C10 as your first bike. What inspired you to go
racing? My dad bought me that 50cc and we lived on fifteen acres of oranges in Simi Valley, so he bought it for me to ride in the orange orchard. I couldn’t ride be- tween the trees because it would mess up the irrigation ditches, but the dirt road around it I could ride on.
We had a very close friend whose name was Woody Caruth and he rode and was a desert racer. My parents knew Woody when I was born, he learned that I had this Honda 50 and he was kind of a character (in fact, he was an LA Deputy Sher- iff.) He kinda started makin’ fun of me in a way like “Why don’t you race that thing? You don’t just ride it by >>
