COLTON DERICO
As a child, many sit upon the sidelines
and behind television screens, dreaming, idolizing the moment they will get a chance to perform in front of thousands. At that age, everything seems larger than life; the jumps, sending you into outer space. The pace, faster than the speed of light. And their dreams are out of this world. Events like these, are platforms where they can perform in front of all family and friends, all in hopes of a trophy and to identify them- selves as a true racer. They embody the core of this game, why we all got started. Moto number one, saw names such as Chris Harris, Uriah Wood, and Timothy Scott in the top three. It was Harris, taking the lead early on with authority, and never looking back. Setting the fastest time on lap three, he felt pressure from the number 45 of Wood. Scrubbing the ant hills and table top’s with adequate precision, he was do- ing all he could to pull away; it would work, as he would end up leading from start to finish, with Wood a slim five seconds away, and Scott finishing third. As each mechanic held up the rear wheel, the riders began to twist their throttle with all their might; it was time to clear out the engines, and really get these machines rolling. A little bit of drag to the front brake, the right elbow cocked, and the field was off after the gate fall, Colton Derico emerging as leader in the early go- ing. Doubling everything in sight, you had to take a second glance, just to realize the age of the number 80; as from a distance,
it appeared as a mirage, and you would think he was a professional on television. The speed was there, and each jump he wasn’t completing, he would charge the face with blistering speed. All to lock up the rear wheel on the face, and immediately shoot down the other side, spraying dirt on who ever was behind him. It was working, as each lap the gap over Chris Harris and Uriah Wood would increase. On the final go around, his mechanic clapping his hands and fist bumping, Derico gave a subtle look over, knowing that all he had to do was make it to the final stripe. And once he’d done it, he envisioned those fireworks go- ing off, visualizing the win of taking victory in Supercross. This was his stage, and well deserved; he earned every bit of the win and championship.
