Tyson Johnson has attracted many fans since moving up onto the 125cc machine with the BTO Sports amateur team at the beginning of the 2017 season, showing top ten speed on multiple occasions at many different amateur nationals ever since. In addition to his ability as a racer, the young Californian possesses one of the most aesthetically pleasing styles throughout the amateur ranks, regularly tossing it sideways and upside down in unbelievable fashion. The KTM rider spent absolutely no time adapting to the Michiganian sand during practice on Friday morning, providing those who were awake with a show of epic proportions. His first contest of the weekend took place on Friday night at the best whip competition, narrowly missing out on the win and five hundred dollar cash bonus to local talent, Joey Crown. Although Crown had the hometown advantage, Johnson had no shortage of fans due to his fearless riding style and two-stroke machinery. The first day of racing was a solid start for the teenager out of California, placing himself on the box in both the 125 B/C class as well as the Schoolboy 1 class. His starts put him in a good position in both motos, settling into a comfortable second place behind Carter Biese.
