ACCOMPLISH HIS DREAMS. THAT’ IS A GREAT FEELING!”
GIVE US SOME BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON YOURSELF AND HOW YOU FIRST GOT STARTED IN THIS SPORT
I got my first ever motorcycle when I was 7 for my birthday in 1974. Then I raced that year and got 1st at my first race in Louisiana.
WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO PASS ON YOUR KNOWLEDGE TO OTHER RIDERS?
There is no greater feeling
than throwing your leg over a motorcycle and getting to the checkered flag. I have a passion for the sport and I get the same feeling when I help a rider accomplish his dreams. That’s a great feeling!
WITH MANY DIFFERENT OPTIONS ON WHERE TO START YOUR FACILITY, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE YOUR FACILITY AT IT’S CURRENT LOCATION?
Oklahoma is an awesome place for Mx - “Field of Dreams” is where we help make dreams come true!
DESCRIBE THE MENTAL ASPECT OF BEING A TRAINER, AND HOW IT AFFECTS A RIDER.
You have to be mentally tough, confident and caring. Making the riders realize that you really care about them and that they are
not just a number. As a trainer, your riders have to trust you and respect you. I not only tell my riders what they should do, but I lead by example by showing them. I still ride and race, so I can feel what they are going through.
WALK US THROUGH WHAT A FULL TIME RIDER WOULD GO THROUGH AT YOUR TRAINING FACILITY. Track work would consist of motos, speed work, technical work, starts, jumps, corners and what each individual rider needs help on.
Physical training would consist of bicycling, circuits, Trail runs, kayaking, strength training and wakeboarding. Sherri and I do all the training with the riders.
We help build Mental confidence and teach them being mentally tough on the track is a must. Sherri helps teach them about nutrition and how to add nutritional supplements to their program.
TELL US HOW HAVING A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR RIDER REFLECTS ON THEIR RESULTS ON THE TRACK.
Having a good relationship is important, because if your rider doesn’t respect and trust you as
a trainer, then there is no sense working together. Results will never come. They need to be able to look up to you as a coach and a mentor, someone that will be there for them and give them the right advice.
HOW IMPORTANT IS THE THE NUTRITION SIDE OF TRAINING? Just like the motorcycle needs
gas and maintenance. The body needs the right kind of fuel and maintenance also. We believe in eating healthy and clean. Stay away from processed food. A lot of your performance is how you fuel your body leading up to and on race day.
IT’S 2015, THE BIKES ARE FASTER, THE TRACKS GET ROUGHER,
THE JUMPS ARE BIGGER, HOW IMPORTANT IS TRAINING NOW COMPARED TO WHEN THE SPORT FIRST STARTED?
Back in the day, whoever trained hard always came out on top. Same as today, Hard Work Beats Talent when Talent doesn’t Work Hard!
WHAT LEVEL OF SKILL ARE THE RIDERS YOU TRAIN, AND HOW DOES THE TRAINING DIFFER BETWEEN THE SKILL LEVELS? We train all level of riders. The training is different by age of riders and what they can consume at a training session. We train each rider individually. We train only 10- 12 riders at one time. So that we can help each one.
AS A TRAINER, ON RACE DAY WHAT GOES ON BETWEEN YOU AND ONE OF YOUR RIDERS?
We support the riders on race day, but the real work came Monday through Friday. The weekend race is the fun part. We try to prepare them for the race so when they get there, it’s all up to them on how they perform.
