Scott Champion has yet to crack the top ten this season and intended to do so as the West series re- sumed at the penultimate round. Champion got to work on the tight track in Santa Clara coming away with the 18th fastest qualifying time. Maybe a tick off where he would like to be but he was sitting pretty
heading into the night show.
Champion has been known to get solid starts in heat races but could not manage to get one this time as he came around lap one in tenth place. He had to make a move or two to get into a transfer spot and he would do just that by getting around Fredrik Noren on lap three. Noren would actually pass him back the following lap until Champion would once again get back by and move up to seventh where he would finish. A prime heat race for the so cal rider, he looked ready for the main.
Another race, another bad start for Champion. The main event did not go too well for him as he got buried right from the get go. He started out in seventeenth and only got into 16th at the halfway point. The track was very tight making it extra difficult to pass on but Champion was able to sneak in one more to take 15th place overall. It was a hard fought race for him but the result just did not speak for his effort. He will be ready to try and get a top ten this season one more time at the final round in Las Vegas.
