Where do new words come from?
Language is a dynamic phenomenon and although
English has a core of words which have remained
consistent over centuries, there are thousands of new
words which enter and leave the language all the time.
Some words are tied to concepts which fade in
significance, so we stop using them. Others stay the course, usually because they represent permanent features of society. Most are old words in different forms or with fresh functions. Here are some of the most common types of word formation.
