German Restaurants Will No Longer Serve Fries – Due To Oil Crisis
iAV - Antelope Valley Digital Magazine
Due to the crisis caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many shops in Germany are facing a short- age of cooking oil, and some Restaurants have removed the french fries from the menu.
Given that Ukraine is a producer of sunflower oil and rapeseed oil, a country from which Germany
imports these products, the Germans fear that they will soon have to give up french fries.
“We are facing a shortage of cook- ing oil for the fryer, but sunflower oil has also become very expensive,” Darmstadt caterer Freddie Baller, who removed the french fries from the menu, told Bild.
Baller paid 90 euros for a liter of rapeseed oil in January, and today the same oil costs up to four euros per liter.
That, he says, is too expensive, and it would inevitably be a drastic increase in the price of french fries, which would deter many guests.
