Fried, Fatty Food in Southern Diet Bad For Heart, Study Confirms

A new study confirms that a typically Southern diet, loaded with fried and fatty foods, is bad for the heart.
Researchers from the University of Alabama looked at the diets of 17,000 people over 45. They found that those who loaded up on fried and fatty foods, processed meats and
sugary drinks faced a higher risk of a heart attack or heart-related death within six years.
The study echoes previ- ous research associating a Southern diet with an increased stroke risk.
"Regardless of your gen- der, race, or where you live, if you frequently eat a Southern-style diet you should be aware of your risk of heart disease and
try to make some grad- ual changes to your diet," said James Shikany, lead researcher and a nutritional epi- demiologist at the University of Alabama.
Other diets heavy on convenience foods or loaded with sweets were not associated with an elevated heart attack risk.
