An African-American woman from the United States has been left stranded in Pakistan after her plans to marry a man she met online fell through.
Onijah Andrew Robinson, 33, flew to Karachi in October last year to marry 19- year-old Nidal Ahmed Memon, but shortly
after her arrival, Memon’s family refused to approve the marriage, leaving her in a difficult situa- tion.
Robinson, whose tourist visa has now expired, was left with nowhere to stay. She went to Memon’s home in the Garden area, only to find it locked and the family
had vacated the property, The Express
Tribune reported.
Following this, Robinson staged a sit-in outside the house and took shel- ter in the building’s parking area. Her actions caught the attention of locals and made headlines across the country.
Despite receiving help from a non-gov- ernmental organisa- tion (NGO), which offered her a return ticket to the United States and financial support, Robinson chose to remain in Pakistan.
In a video message, Robinson recently demanded assis- tance, saying, “I would like you guys to book my ticket back to New York. Money is short right now, and I will appre- ciate it."
At one point, she requested a sum of Pakistani Rupees 100,000 from the government, stating she intended to travel to Dubai with her “husband" and claim- ing her search for him was ongoing.
However, in a twist to the story, Robinson’s son, Jeremiah Robinson, who is based in the US, claimed in a video that his mother had mental health issues.
He described her as mentally unwell, with impaired judgment, and mentioned that she had initially planned to return home after two weeks but failed to do so. Jeremiah and his brother reportedly tried to convince their mother to return, even booking a flight for her, but Robinson refused.
Despite her son’s claims, Robinson now seems to have agreed to return to the US and has requested a return ticket to New York.
