PORTER (WGME) - A woman was transported to the hospital after being bit by a black bear in Porter on Friday.
Mark Latti, spokesperson for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, says it happened just before noon Friday in the 64-year-old woman's back yard while she was out working in her garden.
Latti says her dog started barking and took off into the woods, and she went to investigate when she heard her dog yelp. She then saw her dog running out of the woods, being chased by the bear. According to the press release, the woman then confronted the bear head-on and faced the bear as it stood up. She then punched the bear in the nose and was bitten on the right hand in the process. The bear then let go of her wrist and ran back into the woods, leaving her and her dog unharmed.
The woman called 911 and was transported to the hos- pital for puncture wounds on her wrist. The extent of the injuries are not clear as of now, but Latti says the woman is alert and con- scious.
The Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife says the bear hasn't been seen since the provoked attack, and traps have been set to try to capture the bear alive. The bear had been seen days earlier eating birdseed that had been left behind.
The Department reminds people that bears can be found all throughout Maine, and that if bears have been spotted in your area to remove any potential food sources from your yard. For dog owners, if bears have been seen nearby, the Department suggests walk- ing your dog on a non- retractable leash, turning on any outside lights before letting your dog outside at night, and to turn around and leave if you do see a bear.

Bell’s Volcano Menu is expected to return to menus on June 29 and to cele- brate the menu’s highly anticipated return, the fast- food chain teamed up with Paris Hilton to launch the brand’s first advice phone line.
Hilton, known for her 2000s-era catchphrase “That’s hot,” will run the “That’s Hot” advice phone line for a limited time. People can call 1- 844-THTS-HOT, toll-free, to listen to pre-recorded content from Hilton until Aug. 2, a news
release said.
“Taco Bell’s Volcano Menu isn’t just iconic, it’s the epitome of hot,” Hilton said in a statement. “I am loving being a part of this Y2K revival with my very own Hot Line and hope fans will take my advice to sliv más.”
The collaboration comes as the Volcano Menu is expected to return to menus nationwide on June 29. Taco Bell Rewards Members will have exclusive access to it on June 27, two days before it’s available to the general public.
The Volcano
Menu will include the Volcano Taco, a Double Beef Volcano Burrito and Lava Sauce. The fan-favorite menu was estab- lished in 1995 and has returned to Taco Bell menus periodical- ly.
The latest re- introduction marks the third time the menu has returned to Taco Bell.
Fans have advo- cated for the Volcano Menu to return on social media since it left menus in
2013, The Daily Meal reported.
The company also announced the return of two menu items: the Bacon Club Chalupa and the Double Steak Grilled Cheese Burrito. However, fans can no longer enjoy the Quesarito at Taco Bell locations.
April 19 was the last time cus- tomers could order the online exclusive menu item.
