Augusta Civic Center Attempts To Break World Record For Largest Gathering of Elvis Impersonators

AUGUSTA (WGME) –- There was a world record attempt like no other in Augusta Tuesday in honor of the king of rock and roll.
Organizers attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the largest gather- ing of Elvis imper- sonators.
Those behind the event, which is taking place during
National Elvis Week, say it's to honor Elvis Presley's only per- formance in Maine, which took place in 1977 at the Augusta Civic Center.
It's also the 50th anniversary of the Civic Center, which is celebrating the year with historic memories, moments and mile- stones.
"There's just no greater memory or milestone or moment from the
Augusta Civic Center than Elvis' only performance in Maine, so we wanted to honor that," Augusta Civic Center Director Margaret Noel said.
There is no word yet on if they beat the record, but Noel says the cen- ter wanted to also honor the fans and give back to the community, so they collected food and personal hygiene donations for local service agencies.
