A restaurant in the U.K. has decided to stop catering to veg- ans because its owners were apparently fed up with their "holier- than-thou" atti- tude.
The Kitchen at London
House on the Isle Wight said it posted its new vegan-less menu for the owners’ new restaurant a nd received swift backlash.
"[S]ome nasty people have felt it’s their place and right to criti- cize this fact," the restaurant wrote in a Facebook
post. "You have to ask yourself, do you think that bullying someone is going to endear them to you? Is it going to make them rethink their deci- sion...maybe I should? NO it does not!"
The restaurant said it
had catered to vegans in the past, offering everything from vegan cream teas to special vegan bacon.
"We stopped. Why? Because we got fed up with the arrogant, ‘holier-than-thou attitude,’" the restaurant wrote.
The owners chid- ed vegans for expecting a restaurant to adapt its menu to suit their prefer- ences, noting that if they had gone to a vegan restaurant, they wouldn’t expect to be served a steak.
"You have cho- sen your lifestyle, it’s not a medical condition that you’ve been forced to endure through no fault of your own," the restaurant said. "Your choice does not fit with our style of cook- ing. We respect your choice, and expect that you respect ours."
Venice Fines Tourist Surfers For Motoring Down Grand Canal
MILAN (AP) — Two foreign tourists who sped down Venice’s Grand Canal on motorized surf boards Wednesday have been heavily fined and the boards have been confis- cated, city author- ities said.
The mayor’s office said in a statement that the two were fined 1,500 euros ($1,530) each over the incident, and the city’s attorney is prepar- ing further action against them for damaging the city’s image.
Earlier, Mayor Luigi Brugnaro posted a video on social media showing a pair of surfers heading down the famed waterway as the sun rose in the distance. The mayor asked for help in appre- hending what he called “two over- bearing imbeciles who are making a mockery of the city,” and prom- ised dinner for anyone who iden- tified the scofflaws.
Venice has long suffered over- tourism, and has a long list of rules governing the
behavior of visi- tors.
The city fined two German travelers $1,000 in 2019 for making coffee on the 430-year-old Rialto Bridge. Visitors also are prohibited from swimming in the canals and from eating on the steps of monu- ments. or face fines.
From next year, day-trippers will have to pay a visi- tor’s tax to help offset the elevat- ed costs of pro- viding services in the canal city.
