By volume 3,477 dwellings were consented in the June 2020 month, +20.4% on June 2019 but down slightly on May 2020, comprising:
• 1,885 standalone houses.
• 1,071 townhouses, flats & units. • 288 retirement village units.
• 233 apartments.
This rise was boosted by another bumper crop of new townhouses, flats & units, also marking the first time that more than 1,000 higher density homes have been consented in a month since the series began in April 1990.
On top of this, looking at the June 2020 quarter, townhouses, flats & units represented fully 28% of all new homes.
Staying with the June quarter, Canterbury (+26%) was the only region to see a gain in new dwelling volumes, with Wellington experiencing the biggest drop (–16.5%).
The consent value numbers for YTD June 2020 paint a more reserved picture:
• Residential: $15.7 billion (+4.5% on
YTD June 2019).
• Non-residential: $6.8 billion
(–8.9%).
• Total: $22.4 billion (flat).
By volume, 37,614 dwellings were consented in the June 2020 year, +8.1% on YTD June 2019.
Building consent data for July is scheduled for release on 1 September.
The next data set for the Value of building work put in place for the June 2020 quarter will be released on 4 September.
