“August’s consent figures continue to be erratic, with the month’s residential consent value negative and non-residential positive”
• Residential: $15.7 billion (+2.8% on YTD August 2019).
• Non-residential: $6.8 billion (–9.5%).
• Total: $22.5 billion (–1.3%). YTD August 2020, the non-
residential building types with the highest values were:
• Education: $1.1 billion (–5.8%) • Storage: $1.0 billion (–5.8%)
• Offices, Administration &Public Transport: $952 million (–1.8%). By volume, 37,467 dwellings were
consented in the August 2020 year, +5.1% on YTD August 2019.
This figure includes a record 10,063 townhouses, flats & units consented
in the August year, the first time this number has surpassed 10,000 since the early 1990s.
By region, the biggest gains in the number of new dwellings consented in the year ended August 2020 (compared with the August 2019 year) were:
• Wellington: +15% on YTD August
2019.
• Canterbury: +8.8%.
• Auckland: +3.7%.
• Rest of North Island: +3.9%. • Rest of South Island: +3.5%. • Waikato: +1.4%.
September’s building consent data is scheduled for release on 2 November, while the September 2020 quarter’s Value of Building Work put in Place will be out on 4 December.
