Looking forward and looking back
UPGRADED
THIS TIME LAST year, I was still celebrating our return to Alert Level 1.
Great to be able to be out and about, I thought – but also “dangerous to assume it will be ‘business as usual’ or that we’ll be ‘back to normal’ any time soon”!
Less than a week later Auckland was back at Alert Level 3 and then 2.5.
After that it wasn’t until 8 October that the City of Sales returned to Alert Level 1...
12 months hence, we’re still working out the “next normal”, let alone the “new normal”.
12 months hence, the global supply chain remains wilful and is still wilting under the pressure of pent-up demand.
12 months hence, we’re still a small country and still at the bottom of the world and a long, long way from the factories that make stuff to build houses with.
In fact, there probably hasn’t been an article in this magazine in the last year plus that hasn’t talked about product delays, shortages and rising costs.
The national media are all over it, like New Zealand was alone in all this and there was something that could be done about the situation in the short or even medium term?
Interesting to note that all but a tiny fraction of respondents to our latest Industry Survey, when asked “What are the biggest challenges facing the building product and services industry in the next 6-12 months?” replied “Supply chain & fulfilment”!
See the next magazine for more details on this latest survey – and thanks by the way to everyone who contributed!
Other to-dos for this month include reminding you all to consider getting
in early and booking your tickets to the 20201 Hardware Awards Gala Dinner (10 November 2021).
Soon enough, by way of encouragement, we will be highlighting some of this year’s Semi-Finalists, online first and then in the magazine.
And by the way thank you all for your nominations of both individuals and stores.
We’re now setting off on our annual mission to qualify those individuals and those stores, not to mention turning nominations into actual entries!
You can check out how we’re doing (and book tickets!) here:
