Children should be able to identify the things that Jeff was telling himself when others were encouraging him to learn to climb, “They should help me. They are just being mean to me .” These are going to probably be the same things that your children tell themselves in similar situations. They will be able to identify the accompanying emotions... “he was angry with the others.”
They will also be able to recognize that Jeff manipulated the other monkeys when he whined, begged and threatened the others. You wand them to recognize the typical behavior of the others... they gave in, was not helping Jeff learn an important skill. Then shift the discussion and let your child see how their (the other monkey’s) thinking was stinky and how they let themselves feel guilty or intimidated (scared).
You want to encourage your child to see that you can play a role in helping others by not giving into the irrational (stinky thinking) demands of others. Here we want rational helping strategies such as “show him how to climb” or “put him in a small safe tree.” Once again, we want to avoid punitive behaviors by others.
