You want your child to come up with the type thinking Jeff would have; “I don’t have to do this,” “I’m too scared to do it,” “I should not have to do this,” “They are being mean to me,” and then help them identify the emotions that would accompany these thoughts... anger and possibly, fear.
The behavior that followed in this progress is that he refused to learn to climb trees. Guide them through “challenging” their (Jeff’s) irrational thinking. This challenging of irrational beliefs is an essential skill to modify inappropriate emotions and behaviors.
Let them come up with serious consequences of Jeff not learning to climb the trees. A minimizing of consequences is always a deterrent to changing behavior.

Because he thought he could get plenty to eat without doing anything difficult.
