I often hear adult humans telling their children to say please and thank you. However, I often notice that these children will not say those words unless their parents are nearby.
I understand why those from Atlantis thought that Politeness was an important gift. It helps others feel comfortable with you. If you say, Give me that, the first thing most humans will think is, They are too pushy. I will show them and not give it to them. But if you say, Please may I have that, others will recognize that you are showing respect and will be more inclined to share with you. If you follow up your request with Thank you, the other person knows that you appreciate their giving it to you.
If they don’t share and you say Thanks anyway (or something like that), the other person knows that you are not angry with him or her. These few words will eliminate a lot of misunderstandings and hurt feelings.
The same is true for proper Language and Grammar as it eliminates a lot of confusion. It also gives the impression that you know what you are talking about. Communication is the key to being successful in most things.
