L 'Amour de Maman The Acadian Textile Heritage INTRODUCTION BY ROBERT R. MACDONALD
Louisiana holds a special place in the American psyche. Meandering bayous, live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, and a semi-topical climate make an environment unmatched in other areas of our country. Louisiana is a “gumbo” of peoples and cultures, a blend of traditions with roots in Spain, Canada, Germany, West Africa, the Caribbean, Anglo-America, native American Indians, and particularly, France. L’Amour de Maman: The Acadian Textile Heritage studies an important French cultural group, the Acadians who settled in southern Louisiana. The Acadian textile heritage reflects the history of the Acadian people in Louisiana over the past two centuries. In the materials, techniques, and products of Acadian weaving traditions we witness the adaptation of ancient skills and aesthetic tastes to a New World environment. The result is a unique contribution to the fabric of American life.
