Re: Miracote MPC Hard Parking Deck Coating - Taber Abrasion Analysis CS-17 Wheels Date: March 1, 2014
Scope:
The purpose of this analysis is to evaluate the abrasion resistance performance of Miracote MPC Hard Parking Deck Coating when tested using Calibrase CS-17 wheels on a Taber Model 5130 Abraser. Typically cement-based coatings such as MPC are tested for abrasion resistance using Calibrade H-22 wheels, as these are recommended for use on concrete substrates. Crossfield Products Corp. had previously tested the abrasion resistance of MPC Hard using CS- 17 wheels unfortunately with inconclusive results. Prior to reaching 1000 cycles, the test procedure had to be prematurely aborted due to the severe wear and destruction of this type of wheel when testing MPC Hard. On February 14, 2014 another test was conducted with two sets of CS-17 wheels. The first set would be replaced with the second when required to complete the 1000 cycles.
Test and Results:
Taber Abrasion Testing was performed in accordance with ASTM D-4060. MPC Hard Parking Deck Coating was applied to a specimen plate in one coat at approximately 30 mils. The specimen was allowed to cure for 7 days before commencement of testing. MPC Hard specimen was subjected to CS-17 wheels at a load of 1000 grams. The test was halted at 500 cycles at which time the specimen plate was weighed to record a loss of 35 mg. The test continued for another 200 cycles and needed to be halted again in order to replace the severely worn CS-17 wheels. With the second set of wheels the test resumed until the completion of 1000 cycles. The specimen plate was weighed again and a total of 65 mg was recorded. Upon visual examination of the specimen plate there is no noticeable wear pattern that can be seen with the naked eye.
Conclusion:
MPC Park Deck Coating and MPC Hard Park Deck Coating (with aluminum oxide) have exhibited long term outstanding wear resistance on parking decks and other structures for over 30 years. Both routinely outlast polyurethanes in abrasion and wear resistance, UV stability, and sustainability. In comparison testing for abrasion resistance with Taber H-22 wheels, MPC Hard exhibits superior abrasion resistance over the regular version of MPC Park Deck Coating and is recommended for use where the highest level of abrasion resistance is required. As a testament of the exceptional performance of MPC Park Deck Coating is a precast parking deck project specified by Walker Restoration (Philadelphia) at the Herndon Monroe Metro Park & Ride deck in Northern Virginia. Completed in the fall of 2008, MPC Park Deck Coating was installed by Eastern Waterproofing & Restoration over 130,000 SF of top deck. Despite daily and high traffic volume, this parking deck is its 6th year of service and exhibits minimal wear primarily confined to the turn lanes. (Picture attached)
